First we should agree on the necessity of LIFELONG LEARNING. One cannot achieve lifelong learning with face to face or blended learning.
ONLINE is at your service at any time of your life, wherever in the world, it can be reached by all the people of the world. Can you imagine your course is being followed by 6 BILLION people in the world. Yes even today it is possible. A good online should be shared by the world. MIT OPENCOURSEWARE is a good example. It is the best service to the human beings in the world.
One can use all the multimedia effects available in the world so that students understand and comprehend the subjects 5 times better than in the classical classroom. But unfortunately commercial concerns make the ONLINE unattractive. And commercial attitudes cause to increase the number of online programs in USA evryyear by 23 %. There are 16,000,000 college studentss. 3,5 million takes online. I wish they were all good ones. But not. That is the biggest hinder in front of ONLINE challenges.

I fully agree with the lifelong learning comment. At age 52 I am just now finishing my BS degree. After 5 years of facilitating a computer based training lab, I find it to be a very good delivery system for these technical subjects. The courses are balanced out by utilizing hands-on trainers and an instructor to assist and assess along the way. I find this blended balanced approach is very popular with the majority of students.
